Mini Green Smoothie Challenge

by Emma on April 9, 2012

in Breakfast,Drinks,Snacks

If you follow me on instagram you probably already saw that last week I took on a mini green smoothie challenge. Up until a week ago today I had never tried  a smoothie made with greens so it was a lot of fun to try something new. Above was one of my favorite smoothies from the week-it involves pineapple and spinach. You can see all my smoothie creations along with recipes over at A Beautiful Mess today.

If you decide to join in with us and take the Green Smoothie Challenge please let me know about your favorite smoothie creations-as I really enjoyed the week and will probably keep making green smoothies from time to time. Or if you already have a favorite recipe let me know-I’d love to try it out.

I love green monster smoothies as we call them as home!
My favourite one is strawberries, banana, banana yoghurt, fresh spinach (all this frozen) & ice. I add a drop of milk for better texture. On extra special ocasions: vainilla ice cream, strawberries & spinach (I also have here a drop of milk to improve the texture. Yuuum!! xx

I am so excited to try this. I think I might combine some of your ideas and toss the coconut in with the bananas and pineapple.

Aww, I love starting my day with a green smoothie! Last summer I would just throw in whatever was fresh from the Farmer’s Market that day. Can’t wait to continue this routine this summer! Will have to check out your combinations for inspiration.

I usually throw in whatever is on hand. Lately it’s been strawberries, banana, apple, blueberries, and spinach. I also throw in a little parsley or cilantro for their detoxing benefits :)

Thank you for posting this! So excited to try your recipes. I was loving following them on instagram.

My favorite:
1 cup almond milk
2 handfuls spinach
1 cup frozen fruit – pineapple, mango, papaya mix
1tbsp ground flax
1tbsp almond butter
Add water to thin if needed. Yum!

I’ve been curious about these green smoothies. Do they have a strong spinach taste? I’m not a big spinach fan, but I can’t imagine they taste bad, since I’ve seen so many people rave about them!

Im not sure if this will double post, because i tried it earlier..anyway :)
I like making:
a couple handfuls of kale or chard
1 cup of almond milk
1/2 cup of coconut water
1/2 of chopped fresh mango
a scoop of your fave protein powder
and how much ice you prefer depending on thickness you like :)
Enjoy!

awesome! I did a 14 day challenge a little while back, and thought it was great! I got Ryan and the kids drinking them too, and I felt better about getting more greens in our systems than we normally would in a month! My favorite is banana, mango, pineapple, flax seed, spinach. I tried kale as well, but my blender had a harder time blending it up, and I wasn’t a fan of chewing on little leafy bits, so we stick to spinach for now. :)

Yes! Your challenge is what inspired me (linked you on the ABM blog). Holly-you are awesome!

Can I just say, I just recently started reading your sister’s blog abeautifulmess which led me to your blog, and I just LOVE IT for no particular reason except how positive you are! Of course the yummy food, cute crafts, and lovely outfits don’t deter me from coming back over and over and over again either :)

Emma April 9, 2012 at 5:36 pm

Thank you so much Esme-your kind comment really made my day!

Amy April 9, 2012 at 4:34 pm

I tried this recently too with kale! I made an almond vanilla banana kale smoothie and it surprisingly turned out sweet (despite it’s green appearance). Kale can be kind of bitter, but the vanilla almond milk really balanced it well.

I am newly addicted to green smoothies too! A few things I love to put in them are orange juice instead of water, or pomegranate juice is good too. I also usually add a 1/2 cup of plain non fat greek yogurt for some added protein and creaminess. I also always freeze my bananas when they are a day or two too ripe for me to eat and keep them in the freezer for smoothies. What a fun challenge!

i love the idea, and i love the glasses too…
I will make them and see how delicious they are!

I woke up this morning and logged on to read some blogs. As I was reading this post I heard my flatmates wandering around the kitchen with the blender blaring. Funnily enough they were making a green smoothie, and offered me a glass. Superb way to start off the day, I must say! Haha.

I just recently became addicted to these green smoothies (although when I make them with red berries, they’re really more blue-purple-brownish smoothies :) Anyhow, my favorite combo is this:

1 cup homemade cashew milk
1 cup coconut water
splash of flax oil
a couple squirts of agave nectar
a couple big spoonfuls of nonfat greek yogurt
2 handfuls of fresh baby spinach
1 banana, cut up
1/2 cup frozen mango chunks
1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks
small knob of peeled ginger
(I actually cut up the bananas, prep the knob of ginger, and make up sandwich baggies full of the the banana, ginger, pineapple and mango chunks, and then pop them in the freezer so they’re ready for my Ninja!)

blend for a couple of minutes… turn off blender and let everything settle… then blend again for another minute or so…

the homemade cashew nut milk makes it super creamy!

btw… I LOVE your blog… and your sister’s blog :) thanks for all of your inspiration!

Yes! I’m a big fan of green smoothies. I’m assuming you picked up victoria boutenko’s book?

Unpublished Life April 10, 2012 at 10:50 am

Brilliant post! I have been hunting for a good green smoothie recipe for ages. I’ll head on over and check it out!

Toni April 10, 2012 at 12:44 pm

These are amazing. I never thought I’d have spinach in my smoothie. My favourite one is:

2 small braeburn apples (peeled and chopped)
2 handfuls of spinach
200ml cold jasmin green tea
1 tbsp honey

I love both your and Elsie’s blogs! So inspiring! x

candace April 10, 2012 at 10:37 pm

I love fruit smoothies, but somehow it never occurred to me to add spinach…great idea!
Another bonus healthy ingredient to add in is Chia seeds, although you’ll probably wanna floss your teeth after :)

mary April 27, 2012 at 4:52 pm

so inspiring! i’ve just made the apple’s one with milk and mascarpone
