DIY Chalkboard Cheese Platter

by Emma on January 12, 2012

in Craft

I’ve been seeing these chalkboard cheese platters around the internet and I thought they were so cute! So I decided to make one. I used a lazy susan that I got at a thrift store, so my cheese plate can rotate. My thought was, if I set this out in the middle of the table with friends they could easily rotate it, for sharing purposes. :)

Supplies: chalkboard paint, foam brushes, the plate or platter you want to use (you could use an old cutting board, but I do recommend something wood or something paint can cling to), newspapers.

1. Prep your board by cleaning it. Let it dry if wet. 2. Paint on your board. I ended up needing two coats and let it dry in between each coat. That’s it!

As with any chalkboard surface, before writing on it for the first time slate the entire surface with a thin layer of chalk then wipe off. Now you’re ready to label and serve up some fancy cheeses! I placed wax paper under all the edible items, as I don’t think chalkboard paint is a recommended surface to eat off of. Just saying.

This has been craft #3 of 2012. Happy crafting! xo. Emma

What a genius idea! The lazy susan makes so much sense for cheese sharing. I like that you’re doing more crafting, can’t wait to see more.

What a good idea!! We have some leftover chalkboard paint from a wall we painted in our kitchen. I’ll have to try this out this weekend! Even a little cheapie platter from the 99c store might be cute.

Love this! This idea is so perfect!

I love this idea! it’s so handy because at dinner parties I feel I am always saying to people “Well this one is brie and this one is wensleydale and this one is cheddar” so now they will know themselves.
Love your crafting resolution too, your doing great.

This is lovely! Except…what if I don’t want to share my cheese plate with anyone? I guess I can just spin it 360 degrees, and slice myself off another little nibble. Thanks for sharing!

Looks great! Why do you put chalk over the whole surface before writing on it?

Emma January 13, 2012 at 1:21 am

If you don’t it will be very hard to erase the first thing you write on it. I don’t know the science behind it, but we’ve done enough craft projects with chalkboards that I’ve learned this step actually does help a lot. Hope that answers your question. :)

That looks like such a great idea! I’m definitely going to have to try it ot soon :)

And I thought chalk and cheese weren’t supposed to go so well together…

Genius! I need to get me some of this chalk paint though I fear it will mean my whole house has chalkboard surfaces.

Looking forward to your next craft!

This would be a great idea for any party nibbles! So you can easily help out the vegetarians/dairy free/wheat free folks with their choices (those people are multiplying at an alarming rate, don’t you think?)
