Blueberry Scones+Birthday Give Away!!!

by Emma on January 20, 2010

in Breakfast

Blueberryscones
Tomorrow is my birthday! I am going to be 24. Every year for my birthday I do a birthday year goal list. It's a lot like new year's resolutions but, in my opinion, more challenging. This year my list includes 24 things to do before I turn 25. Starting tomorrow I will have a whole year to achieve my goals. Some are fun, some are hard, some will take a lot of time and some I could get done in an afternoon (I just never do, so it's going on the list). I just finished my birthday goal list while I was baking these (truly delicious) blueberry scones.

I scammed (and slightly adapted) this recipe off of Martha. P.S. if you want to see a really funny video of Martha Stewart click here.

Batter
Ingredients: 2 cups flour, 3 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons baking soda, 3/4 teaspoon salt, 4 ounces of butter, 2 eggs (one for the batter one for the egg wash), 1/2 cup buttermilk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Oh-and blueberries! 1 cup please.

In a large mixing bowl mix together the dry ingredients, then with a pastry blender or your hands mash in the butter so that a fine grainy mixture forms. Stir in blueberries. In a small mixing bowl whisk together buttermilk, an egg and vanilla. Now combine the wet ingredients to the dry and mix together. Do not over mix, just stir together until batter barely clumps together.

Dough
Place batter on a lightly floured surface and knead together once so that the dough is fully formed. Mush into an elongated rectangle and cut into triangles (or squares or rhombus, whatever floats your boat). Place scones onto a greased baking sheet. Now whisk remaining egg in a small bowl and lightly coat scones with egg wash.

Eggwash
Sprinkle with sugar and bake at 375 F for 20 minutes. Serve warm with milk or coffee. Or if you like to pretend you're in London (like me) then tea.

Scones
And now
for the moment you've all been waiting for…da da da DA! Give Away!!!!!

I wanted to do a give away for my birthday. And this will be my very first give away on this blog, so it's a historical moment as well:)

Tiltawhirlcupsmain     Photo 10

Tell me your favorite birthday memory in the comments below and you could win your very own set of cute cupcake liners from Bake it Pretty. I will choose the winner at random over the weekend. And this give away will close at midnight on my birthday (tomorrow, Jan 21st).

Good Luck!

I love love love your blog. I can’t wait to get back to school so I can try some of your recipes (I’m visiting family right now so I don’t have to cook here).
My favorite birthday memory… Last year for my birthday two of my great friends and I went to see my absolute favorite band play. It was the same night of my senior homecoming dance and I was sad to miss it so, as a compromise, we all wore our homecoming attire to the concert. It was a blast :)
Happy birthday tomorrow!!

hi emma.
well my favorite birthday memory would have to be when i turned 22. i graduated from college on my birthday. so i got to go out with my friends the night before and celebrate graduating and my birthday and then my family came in for my birthday and i was able to celebrate with them too. the best thing about it by far was receiving my degree in theatre!

Burgess January 20, 2010 at 3:04 pm

My Birthday is on Friday!! My favourite memory from a b-day….when I ditched school and my hubby (then boyfriend) took me to the zoo and we rode the carosel. I was turning 21 — but it was so fun to pretend like I was a kid again!

SusannRomy January 20, 2010 at 3:06 pm

Hey! First of all – I really enjoy reading your blog!
My favorite memory: I had a great birthday in 2005 when I was staying in Chicago as an au pair. My host family took me out to a Japanese restaurant. You know, the ones where they have table side service. Our chef was frying rice and shaping little hearts. He also did funny things with our shrimps (first time I had any). Being from the German countryside I was really blown away!
But to be honest, every birthday is pretty much great, ’cause it’s also my dad’s birthday :-)

hollysarah. January 20, 2010 at 3:10 pm

My favorite birthday moment was when I was 8 years old, and my mom and dad surprised me with a new pink bicycle… sounds lame, but it was a very cool bike! I freaked out. There were tears. :)
Happy birthday to you tomorrow!!
XOXO

anna January 20, 2010 at 3:39 pm

my favorite birthday memory was when i turned 21 (yes, i remember it, amazing right??) i was working at disneyworld and my whole family came out to see me. my parents and boyfriend came from arizona, and my aunts came in from all over the country. it was great to have everyone together!

larissa norman January 20, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Favorite birthday memory, my birthday is on december 31 and gets forgotten alot but my partner this last year made sure we only celebrated my birthday and took me for dinner and made it known it was my birthday and he just said its your birthday no new years I dont celebrate new years anymore. It was sweet.

Meredith January 20, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I love your blog!! What a great idea for your birthday, a goal list for the year! Love it!
My favorite birthday memory is my 12th birthday, I had a slumber party and we stayed up all night. It was one of those nights where you laugh till you cry and eat junk and feel horrible the next day. But it was so worth it!!!

Hana K. January 20, 2010 at 4:23 pm

My favorite birthday memory is very recent! Just this past year my husband & I spent my birthday in New York for the first time and it was the most perfect present & vacation ever.
Happy Birthday (tomorrow)!

Kelly January 20, 2010 at 4:33 pm

those scones look so yummy, i think ill bake them tonight!
My favorite birthday memory is when i was about 7, my parents had gotten this big teddy bear pinata, i loved it so much when it was finally broke open i got so upset that it was ruined and i cried in front of my whole party. At the time it wasn’t a happy memory but when i look back on it now it makes me and my whole family laugh.

Jill January 20, 2010 at 4:54 pm

happy (almost) birthday, emma!
my favourite birthday memory was when i turned thirteen. my parents made a big hype about that being a monumental birthday- you know, sort of like the coming-of-age one. they planned a surprise for us (my twin sister and i) and loaded us in the car after school to reveal it. as we drove through the city, my sister and i recognized that we were driving the exact route we drive to church every sunday morning, and not too long into the drive we were sure they were taking us to talk with our pastor about this entrance into our teenage years. not exactly the birthday surprise we were hoping for. when we reached the road our church was on, my dad drove right past it (to our relief!) and we arrived at the little airport on the outskirts of the city. they’d booked an airplane ride for us- our first time flying- and we circled above the city we’d grown up in, flew over our house, and saw things in a whole new perspective that day.

Heidi January 20, 2010 at 5:31 pm

My favorite birthday memory would be when i turned 22. I celebrated it as a picnic in a nearby park I had so many friends there, music, drinks, cake. My birthday is at midsummer and at that time we have here perfect white nights! That night was so warm too that we could sit there so long enjoying :)

Cherry Lou January 20, 2010 at 5:52 pm

I’ve got a lot of bad and good memories of my birthday. But my favorite was for my 24th birthday, in december 2008: my boyfriend had secretly organized a little vacation in Stockholm (Sweden is one of my favorite country). We left two days after my birthday, just before Christmas and it was magical <3
So happy birthday to you (it’s already the 21 in France ^^) I wish you lot of sweets things!

Erica Cohen January 20, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Happy Birthday to you! I hope this year will be your favorite birthday yet (:
My favorite B-day memory would have to be just this last summer. On the weekend of my b-day we climbed Longs Peak, a 14er in Colorado that we tried to summit last summer but didn’t make it to the top because of the weather. This year we actually summited, it was really exciting. then, later, my husband surprised me with a banjo! I was so excited, I wanted one for so long, but never really thought I would get one(: I couldn’t believe he went out of his way to find one on craigslist and then totally surprise me…it was great!

Kayleigh January 20, 2010 at 6:18 pm

I would LOVE some new cupcake liners. I just have the plain white ones you get at walmart!
To be honest, I don’t have that many great birthday memories. My family sucks sometimes! But a few years ago I celebrated my birthday along with my niece – our birthdays are only a day apart. They made us both wear silly princess crowns and share everything. It was more fun because of my niece! She is adorable, and I think this was for her 3rd birthday. We even shared a GIANT piece of cake!

audi January 20, 2010 at 6:21 pm

most magical birthday memory is from my 20th birthday just a few weeks ago. I had just gotten back to college. that morning i had class, but right before i went to class i had a voicemail from my momma singing happy birthday to me, since she couldn’t do it in person. later that night, i went to a house show to hear some old friends who were in town play some of my favorite songs. in between songs, they made an announcement that it was my birthday and everyone began singing to me. then, they brought out a giant cupcake from jilly’s cupcake bar in st.louis, complete with a lit candle. i made a wish and blew out my candle, and sat there listening to more beautiful music, surrounded by my wonderful friends for the rest of the night.

Crystel January 20, 2010 at 7:26 pm

Happy early Birthday! I love your blog, and these scones look fabulous! I can’t wait to try to recreate them!
My favorite birthday memory involves my husband, family and carrot cake. This is basically my last few birthdays, and I’ve come to realize the simple pleasures are the best. Food and family make for one fabulous day.

EmilyAnne January 20, 2010 at 8:37 pm

My favorite birthday moment has to be the year I turned 10 years old and my parents surprised my friends and I by taking us to see Little Women. As soon as the movie was over we headed back for a sleep over and talked and whispered about Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Devon Sawa all night.
Have a wonderful birthday! I just celebrated mine yesterday:)

Katie January 20, 2010 at 9:09 pm

Happy birthday, Emma!
My favourite birthday memory was when I turned 16. My mom threw me a surprise birthday party and invited 10 of my friends. I started to cry, I was so surprised. My mom’s pretty special.
Hope you get to celebrate in a fabulous way!

Jen January 20, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Apparently on my fourth birthday, I was really excited to have cake and ice cream since before, it was only cake. I saw it and right as the bowl was put down, i slammed my ENTIRE face into the bowl. My dad was so proud of me that he took me all to the neighbors houses (we lived on an air force base, nothing bad was going to happen) and said “look at my daughter. you can already SEE the IQ rising within her.” Hahaha, ahh, Japan was so wonderful :)

Andi January 20, 2010 at 9:35 pm

I love your blog! Good to know there’s others who share my love for cooking! My favorite birthday memory had to be my 17th birthday. My friends kidnapped me at 5 in the morning, and threw me an early morning breakfast picnic! It was sweet!

Bekka January 20, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Fun giveaway! My favorite birthday memeory was my 13th birthday — I had a sleepover with several of my closest girlfriends! We had such a good time. Maybe I should have one for my 30th that’s coming up… :)
Happy Birthday!

Kristin! January 20, 2010 at 10:13 pm

Emma! Happy Birthday!
I will also be turning 24 but in 9 days! High five for being Aquarius’!
My favorite birthday memory is of birthday parties I had when I was younger, in middle school. My best girl friends would come over, we would play our favorite tapes (No Doubt – Tragic Kingdom!) bake my birthday cake and then sit cross legged on my kitchen floor and dig in – no plates, just forks.
We’d pile into my living room and sleep like hot dogs cuddled next to one another. In the morning, we would make a delicious breakfast of different fruit and waffles and pancakes with sprinkles topped with powdered sugar. They were such a good time!

Haley January 20, 2010 at 10:18 pm

My favorite birthday memories are when my family all goes out to dinner every birthday anyone has, and then we eat triple chocolate cake!

cindy barriga January 20, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Awesome giveaway!
As for my favorite birthday memory that is easy. It was last year when I turned thirty. I was bound to make the entire party spanish + handmade. I made everything from the decorations to the giveaway bags. It took me all of one year but it was fabulous seeing all of my family leave with more than what they came with. At one point I had members arguing over what they wanted to take away. It was cute but really the best part was + still is that they have everything hanging on their walls and are still talking about my party. It was a great day!

Zandra D. January 20, 2010 at 11:31 pm

this is going to sound so ultimately cheesy of me, but last year for my birthday one of my best friends couldn’t make it, because they were wrestling for nationals in Reno, and on my birthday, he made it to the final championship round!! it was so fun and exciting :)

robin January 21, 2010 at 1:08 am

Happy Birthday Emma! My favorite bday memories are of being a little girl and my mom waking me up with surprises then spoiling me all day and usually all week! It was so much fun! I felt so loved…. I hope your day is super fun too :o )

Veronica Leavitt January 21, 2010 at 1:37 am

happy happy birthday!
I really love to read your blog! It makes me happy :)
My favorite birthday memory was my 21st birthday last year! I spent the entire day with my absolute best friends. We mostly just hung out and goofed off, but it was perfect just spending time with the people I love most!
I hope your birthday is just as amazing!

Violet January 21, 2010 at 2:58 am

My favorite Birthday memory? Hmmmm… Well, it usually happens every year (since we’ve been together). Dustin always makes me a Birthday card. He fills it with doodles and love bits and some of his favorite memories of “us”. Every year, the cards are bigger and fuller and they just show how much he loves my little heart. I still take them out and savor them. (Plus cake. I’ve loved all of the birthday cakes I’ve ever gotten. Can’t forget the pastries. ;)
Oh! Happy Birthday to you. Hope you get many pug kisses!

Newo January 21, 2010 at 4:09 am

My favorite birthday memory was on my 16th birthday, My Dad came home after work and took me in another room and secretly gave me a little gift bag, in it was a cute little set of silver skull & crossbone earings that he had seen and thought of me so he got them for me without telling anyone :) i felt so special

Elle January 21, 2010 at 4:56 am

wow, you share a birthday with one of my good friends from primary school, and she turns 24 too!
Well, I’m born on Halloween, but because I live in Australia, not many people do the cool ‘trick or treat’ and costume part. My 21st was a really good night shared with friends from multiple stages of my life, and we all got dressed up which was super fun!
Oh, there was also the birthday when my mum had to run to my grandmothers place with a half-baked cake (they turned off our power)…it ended up being a very lop-sided pumpkin-shaped cake!

Megan January 21, 2010 at 8:10 am

Happy Birthday! My birthday is tomorrow the 22nd! I think my best birthday moment was back to my freshman year of college… I am originally from MKE area of WI and was going to school at the University of MN experiencing some homesickness for my parents, our pup and my younger brothers. My mom surprised me while I was living in the dorms and had a huge birthday cake delivered for all of my friends and I to share to celebrate my birthday, bringing a little piece of home to me in Minnesota.

Dana Benkert January 21, 2010 at 8:29 am

Happy Birthday, Emma!
My favorite birthday memory is from my 28th birthday. My husband and my 2 kids baked a cake for me and used sparklers for my candles. Did you know that when you hold a bunch of sparklers together and light them, you get a torch?! The kids were super proud of their cake and I was super happy to have such a wonderful family. Hope you have a wonderful birthday as well!

Bridget January 21, 2010 at 9:38 am

hi there!
my favourite birthday memory has become one of my favourite memories in general. we (a group of about 11) of us all agreed to meet downtown at a nice restaurant to celebrate my birthday. we had a nice dinner and then it was time for dessert. i don’t know what it was but when the cake came out, everyone was singing for me and i felt so loved and taken care of. it was so wonderful to have all my friends and my boyfriend (now husband) and sis-in-law there to celebrate with me. it’s something i’ll never forget.

Kaleigh January 21, 2010 at 10:18 am

Yum, your scones look AMAZING! My favorite birthday memory was my b-day roadtrip. We went to Vegas and various places in northern AZ(I live in Phoenix). My favorite place we visited was Prescott, AZ. We ate at yummy little restaurants, shopped vintage, drank lots of coffee and explored old bars and hotels! It was the best time ever.

eeny January 21, 2010 at 11:58 am

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
My favorite birthday memory was when I turned 9. My mom and dad signed me up for horseback riding classes and gave me a helmet and riding boots and pants. That was my biggest wish back than and it was a dream come true.

My Favorite Birthday Memory is when everyone got together and went bowling and we had drinks and my cousin was in town from California and it was just so amazing how many people showed up. I love bowling…even though I am no good.

Happy Birthday Emma. It is also my birthday today, I’m turning 27!!!
My favorite birthday memory would have to be 70s disco roller skating for my 23rd. 4 of us had birthday’s in January so we decided since my birthday was a Saturday we would celebrate together as a group by renting out the roller skating rink and dressed in our 70s fabulous wear. Great fun.
Tonight should also be grand – Mexican then off to the Cupcake shop with good friends and family.
-Beth

Ashley Brooks January 21, 2010 at 12:42 pm

My fav bday memory is from year 6! My bday falls in October (10/8) so my AWESOME momma organized a halloween bday party complete with a “yarn-maze” in our back yard, bobbing for apples, eyeball cupcakes, the works! It was so amazing, and such a special memory for me and my mom :)
Happy Birthday Emma, I hope 24 is a good one! ;)

jari January 21, 2010 at 12:50 pm

oh happy birthday emma!!!
and those scones… mmm mmm mmm! i think i might even be able to tackle those :)
my favorite birthday moment was when i was 9 years old, my parents took me and 2 of my friends to the rushmore waterslides. there was sunscreen, lemonade, pizza… and i can close my eyes and still remember that day! which is highly unusual because i have the worst mommy memory everrrr! oh and i had to wait 4 months after my birthday to have my REAL party! Heather Mangan January 21, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Happy Birthday Emma! Hope you have an amazing day!
My favorite birthday memory is when my mom planned a Clue-themed party for me. We made the invites and she coordinated a mystery murder, using my brothers and their friends as the characters. My guests and I had to figure who the murderer was and then we played the board game all night long. It was magical :)

CHICKYTHING January 21, 2010 at 12:50 pm

My birthday last year was very special. My mister and I woke up early and went to all my favorite places. First stop was Anthropologie and he bought me a quilt that I’ve been eyeing for ages! And we went to a Fleamarket then we went home picked up the kiddies and went to the beach and also went out for cupcakes!

bucket January 21, 2010 at 12:53 pm

My favorite birthday memory ever… and my mom will never live this down. I invited a bunch of friends over for a sleep over – I tuned 11. My mom promised to take us to the movies the next day. She decided to take us to the movies in Downtown LA – in one of those cool old theaters (granted this was almost 28 years ago – I’m 39). We were so excited. The movie “La India Maria – OK Mister Pancho.” A Mexican comedian. While I loved it… all my friends where non-Spanish speakers. LOL Just something silly but will never be forgotten or lets just say I don’t let my mom forget it. :)

Fee January 21, 2010 at 12:53 pm

My favorite birthday memory is when I was 3. It is my first memory at all. My grandmother made me the most kitschy rose and blue and silver birthday cake ever. It didn’t taste but I was in heaven :-) !
And by the way: I’d love to see your list!

Kristel January 21, 2010 at 12:53 pm

Happy Birthday!
One of my fave bday memories is from my 21st bday. I had a big party with all my friends and family, and some of the guys serenaded me with “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. It was epic. And some of my older family members were wondering who the heck these crazy sweaty guys were, lol.

Caiti January 21, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Happy Birthday, Emma! Today is my birthday too, I am 27!
My favorite birthday was the year that my then boyfriend (now husband) drove 4.5 hours to come visit me at my college and secretly coordinated with my friends to plan a surprise birthday party including my very favorite homemade enchiladas (my favorite memories always include food!). No one other than my parents had ever thrown me a party!

Krysten January 21, 2010 at 12:58 pm

Happy birthday!
I think my favorite birthday memory was when I turned 15. I had my very favorite girlfriends over and we stayed up all night playing dress-up (yes, at 15), talking about boys, listening to music – the ultimate sleepover.

Brianne Sheppard January 21, 2010 at 12:58 pm

Happy Birthday Emma!
My Favorite Birthday memory was last year for my 23rd… I had an “Old school Grade School” birthday celebration… slushie maker (and maybe a little alcohol to splash in), kiddie pools with a slip and slide, a candy bar, volleyball nets… the whole works.. I didn’t have many parties growing up with my birthday in the summer so it was extra sweet… we’ve never had so much fun… and it was child friendly for our son!

Emily Sandberg January 21, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Happy Happy Birthday!
A favorite birthday memory would have to be a slumber party I when I turned 13! We all thought we were soo cool & stayed up way to late! weeeeeee!

I love reading your blog, you always have great recipes! I love birthdays so its hard to just pick *one* fav memory. I remember the cutest Raggedy Ann themed bday party my mom threw me when I was like 4 or 5. There were a ton of kids there and I remember having a huge cake. It was awesome <3

Happy Birthday Emma!(FYI and offtopic: if hubby and I have another baby and it’s a girl her name will be Emma Jean. Loves!
Anyway, favorite Birthday was this past year when my husband (then fiancee) took charge of everything from dinner, chores, cake, and presents our of my hands and told me to relax and enjoy. The last time that happened I was a young girl living at home with Mum and Dad.
Hope your day is wonderful and you have time to simply spend it with those you love.

Kaitlyn January 21, 2010 at 1:08 pm

Your scones look so delish! I will try them asap. My favorite birthday memory was last year when my boyfriend’s family and mine finally got to meet. It had been two years since we started dating and it all came together perfectly at a tiny pub by my house. I could not have asked for a better birthday!

Randi January 21, 2010 at 1:09 pm

My favorite birthday memory is my 18th. A crazy girl from school that I hardly knew demanded an invitation and then after the party wound up meaning so much to me, I will be the matron of honor in her wedding this year! That birthday was the beginning of something special and I’ll always appreciate that ♥

chelle January 21, 2010 at 1:09 pm

my favorite birthday memory was the year I turned 10 – my mom took me to get my ears pierced and then out for pizza…just the two of us girls for lunch.
i had a lot of great parties, cakes, etc., but the lunch date with mom always shines through in my memories.

AnnieOC January 21, 2010 at 1:16 pm

oh, oh, it’s my birthday today too! :) Happy Birthday!
One of my favorite bday memories was my 16th…my parents tried to throw me a surprise party, but of course someone told me..but we had a dj and all that…i look back at the pics now and laugh at my braces and my high bangs.

Laura Bax January 21, 2010 at 1:17 pm

I’m a newbie to your blog! LOVE it!! My favorite birthday memory was when my husband surprised me with my first Digital SLR camera. He left little clues that were poems all over the house before I finally found the camera. I was crying by the time I got to the last one!

Nadine January 21, 2010 at 1:19 pm

happy birthday! (:
well, my favourite birthday memory
would be my 8th. I held a small
celebration with some schoolmates
and my family at macdonald’s and
since my siblings’ birthdays were
rather near mine, the birthday cake
had our names and somehow, their names were spelt wrongly. only mine
was right :D

chelle January 21, 2010 at 1:21 pm

Happy Birthday! I’m such a dolt and didn’t send my wishes in my previous comment. Sorry.

Creativepeace09 January 21, 2010 at 1:25 pm

Last year I waited a month later for my friend to all be in town and it was worth the wait, I saw all my friends bands play, They got me my own section, My friends and myself all dressed up, It was so much fun we were dancing on the tables, we had such that fun night high after wards we were laughing all the way home, I will never forget it, and I got a bunch of fun gifts like CD’s!
It was lovely!

kristy January 21, 2010 at 1:26 pm

love your blog!
so many amazing birthday memories.
I’ll start with my 25th since that is what is coming for you next.
on my 25th birthday I was living in NYC. my 6 best girlfriends (from san fran, austin, philly,LA to boston) and my mom (from sacramento) all Flew in to NYC celebrate 25 with me. It was such a beautiful simple day. Posh vegan rest for dinner(I’m the only vegan, and I love altering your recipes a tad.. sorry hehe) getting scared at eveil dead the musical, and topping it off with a magical 1am end. Empty freezing streets, and beautiful Macys christmas window displays. i felt like the city was just mine that night (not an easy in new york city).
28 last year in tour my best tour mate laila threw me a surprise bus party. Streamers, balloons, favors, and an cake made out of oreo cookie and those amazing canfdle sparklers! After the celebration back in the venue the band I was on tour with carrried me through the dance floor cheering for me!
one more!
This year My boyfriend of 3 years commissioned a painting of us for my birthday. He brought it into bed the moment I woke up. The best gift I have ever recieved.
okay i’ll stop going on about how many wonderful birthdays i’ve had.
I am very lucky to have amazing people in my life.
you are an inspiration Emma!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Jessica Gabrielle January 21, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Happy Birthday!! You’re just one year away from a quarter life crisis! j/k :)
My favourite birthday memory comes courtesy of my mother. Never one to buy a store bought cake she used to make the most incredible birthday cakes. She’s make everything from indian headdress cakes to the Deathstart to Snoopie’s head. For my birthday she made a GIANT cookie that barely fit into the oven. Needless to say, delicious. :)

laura h. January 21, 2010 at 1:26 pm

those scones look delicious.
My favorite birthday memory is when I got my first computer. My parent’s did know anything about a computer so my aunt bought one from across the state & brought it over to us. My cousin took me to the mall and while we were gone my aunt & parents set up the computer on my desk. I came back from the mall & was telling my parents about it when I noticed the computer. I freaked out & was so excited, they were all ready with their camera & now I have pictures that remind me of that day.
It was the best birthday so far!

Brianna January 21, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Your blog is too cute! i really enjoy it!
Birthday Memory:
a few weeks before my 20th b-day i had surgery to remove a large ovarian cyst(thankfully nothing major). Anyhow, i live in arizona and my best friends live in california. I was kind of bumbed out that i would not be able to travel home to CA for my b-day due to the surgery. I was pretty down but my boyfriend insisted we go out to a dinner he had planned.
He definately had something planned!
We had a great dinner and in front of an old, no longer in service railroad station he proposed! I was so excited, on our way home i was calling all my friends. i finished my last call and walked in my front door to find all my friends and family waiting for a surprise engagement/b-day party!
Best b-day hands down!

krystle payne January 21, 2010 at 1:29 pm

My birthday happens to also be on Valentine’s Day. My personal fav bday memory was a couple years ago when I turned 19, the lovely boy who is now my boyfriend (he wasn’t at the time) bought me a V-day present and B-day present. The first was the only Jack Johnson Cd I didn’t yet own…and the second was a green fishing pole with a construction paper heart on the hook it said something funny like “you’re neat-o” I think. :-) How could I resist, 3 months later we started dating.
I hope you have a fabulous bday!

Tamara Janzen January 21, 2010 at 1:32 pm

My boyfriend(husband now) asked me to be his girlfriend on my 18th birthday. During the day he send me 11 white roses, which I thought was a mistake. But when I saw him later, he gave me the 12th rose which was a red longstem rose. It was pretty romantic. And that is my best birthday memory so far…

cait January 21, 2010 at 1:33 pm

my best friend kristy and I share the same birthday (she’s 1 year younger than me) and we always spend it together. When we were little our parents would alternate the day of and the day after for parties. We have lots of pictures of us at midnight hugging and smiling doing the birthday countdown and I love and treasure them so much!
Happy Birthday Emma :)

Happy birthday! Have anything special planned?
My favourite birthday memory was from when I was around 14 years old. I had a sleepover like usual. But all the power had gone out in the evening. For a good 2-3 hours we had to entertain ourselves in darkness. Luckily my Aunt was there and she told us creepy stories and we played the ‘light as a feather, stiff as a board’ game. When the power finally came back on, we were upstairs attempting to put on pajamas with only a few candles to light up my bedroom. This led us all to screaming.
This makes me want to have a sleepover again!

Julie Ann Perez January 21, 2010 at 1:56 pm

Cute blog! My birthday falls on Mother’s Day every so often. It’s much more fun now that I have kids and it helps that my husband can kill 2 birds with one stone. Last year I begged my family to keep it simple, so each of my four kids and husband made homemade gifts!

Genevieve Gail January 21, 2010 at 2:03 pm

Happy Birthday! 24 is a great year to be! My favorite bday memory was a couple years ago. We all dressed up in 80′s gear and rented a “party bus” to take us roller skating, then we went dancing at a bar that plays only 80′s music. It was SO much fun!

Emma January 21, 2010 at 2:04 pm

Happy Birthday Emma!
Those scones look amazing, I’m going to have a go at those tomorrow.
My favourite birthday memory was getting a red hula hoop, it was just perfect and I played with it for hours on end x

Mary-Beth January 21, 2010 at 2:04 pm

Happy Birthday Emma!
My favorite birthday moment was at 12:00 on the dot when I turned 18. I was in a car with three of my best friends, and when I pulled out at a stop light they all yelled HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! And it distracted me so bad i drove on the wrong side of the median! HAHA. I had to back up in the intersection and get on the right side of the road!:) Fun times…
Hope your day was awesome!

Becca January 21, 2010 at 2:13 pm

My favorite birthday memory was pretty recent. My mother-in-law + I had hot pot for lunch (so tasty). Later on, my hubby surprised me with my presents. I got a cute hat to wear in the snow for our trip to Tahoe + my favorite Audry Hepburn movie, Funny Face. I literally broke out into tears when I pulled the movie out of the gift bag.

Sarah Beth January 21, 2010 at 2:17 pm

my favorite birthday memory… definately the year that i celebrated with family and a picnic by the lake… i think i was 8. but the most amazing part was a cake covered in mermaid figurines.

Crissy January 21, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Amanda January 21, 2010 at 2:20 pm

Happy Birthday Emma!!!! Have a great day!!
My favorite bday memory was years ago when I turned 20 (OMG I am so old!!) and my roommate at college threw me a surprise party, well the coolest part was that I was an art major and all my friends literally pitched in the dollars in their pockets and bought me a drafting table for my bday!! I still use the same drafting table now *teen years later!! :)

Littlemisssugarmouse.blogspot.com January 21, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Happy Birthday! I hope you have a fantastic day! :D
My favourite birthday memory was probably this year’s birthday, when I turned 20. It had snowed several feet the day before, so I had lots of snow for my birthday! It was the most snow we’ve had in over 30 years, and since I grew up and live in an area where snow is pretty rare, I’ve always wanted snow on my birthday. This year I got what I’ve always wanted since I was a small child (it’s one of the few upsides to having a Winter birthday so near to Christmas!). Me and my sisters got wrapped up warm in old mis-matched clothes, got out our old boogieboards and went ‘surfing’ down the snow-covered hill of our garden. We got covered in snow and were frozen, but it was so worth it!
Again, I hope you have a fabulous day,
Becky x

vicki January 21, 2010 at 2:33 pm

oooh fab giveaway, i love it!! my favourite birthday memory has to be last year’s – my 27th birthday, i went to the safari park and saw giraffes for the first time – i got to feed and touch them – it was amazing!!! Happy Birthday for tomorrow xxx

My favorite birthday memory is the survivor themed birthday party my family gave me; tiki torches and all.

Meagan January 21, 2010 at 2:38 pm

mmmm those scones look so good! martha is positively THE greatest.
my favourite birthday memory is when i was 16. a local radio station was holding a “every 9th driver wins backstreet boys tickets” contest in a parking lot by my house. i was convinced i was going to marry nick carter back then, so when we chanced upon it on the way home from work one day, my mom drove up just to press our luck. and i freakin won!! we drove back home and i was screaming through the house that i won bsb tickets. my friend’s mom was there and she said she was in the basement so i ran down as fast as i could and when i got to the bottom there were at least 30 people in my basement and they all yelled “SURPRISE!” i was so shocked i screamed, ran into the wall and fell over. needless to say, it was the best birthday EVER.

amanda webster January 21, 2010 at 2:44 pm

caitlin January 21, 2010 at 2:49 pm

my all-time favorite birthday memory is from when i was a little girl. i turned 9 and had my first sleepover. we played all the normal sleepover games, and we took all of the cushions of of the sectional and used all the girls’ sleeping bags and made a GIANT “matress” bed on the floor for everyone to sleep on one big bed. then we used sheets and things to make a huge fort out of it!! to top it off, my older brother came out dressed like a girl so he could join in the fun! it was blast, and i wish i could do that every year!!!

Rachel January 21, 2010 at 2:52 pm

Just stopping by to say… Happy almost birthday ;) I’m turning 24 in a couple months, too *woohoo!*

Kayleigh January 21, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Happy Birthday!
My favourite birthday was when we were on a class residential in my first year of high school. They called me downstairs to help clean up and i just knew something weird was going on, he led me into this room and everyone was sat down at a table and they all cheered. Then 2 of my best friends each bought me a cake and topped them with them really annoying candles that don’t blow out! I was so embarrassed about all the attention but it was the only birthday i’ve had where everyone really made a fuss, it was lovely.

Carina January 21, 2010 at 2:58 pm

My husband surprising me with a scrapbook. It was not only super cute but so sweet and thoughful. I am always the one scrapping!

My favorite birthday memory would definitely have to be my most recent one, my 17th last October. It was so much fun, I got to spend the evening with my closest friends and my boyfriend and my sister. We went out to eat at BJ’s (one of my favorite restaurants) and just hung out, it was amazing.

Whitney January 21, 2010 at 3:04 pm

Karate January 21, 2010 at 3:41 pm

My favourite, by faaaaar, would be when my friend sent me flowers.
It doesn’t seem like a big deal really, but I was having a really crap time of things and my depression was getting worse and worse. This friend was really the only person I talked to with any regularity and he went away on deployment.
He found out what my favourite flowers were, where I worked (the store number, address and phone number), what my schedule was, my other friend’s contact info (in case I didn’t get the flowers), when my birthday actually was (I never used to tell people as it’s never been a great day for me), etc.
I got a call saying to come in to work as someone had sent me a huge thing of flowers (it was seriously almost 20lbs). No one had ever sent me flowers before. Ever. He had put so much time, effort and thought into the whole thing and arranged it all while on deployment.
Not any deployment where you have internets either. Submarine deployment. Where you only come up for air once in a great while.

Brandy Von Doeren January 21, 2010 at 3:42 pm

I’ve always loved your blog and love tryig out some of the amazing recipes you got going on.
My birthday memory is when my bf (now husband) got me a serger.

Ashley Cauthen January 21, 2010 at 3:42 pm

Happy birthday!!
My most favorite birthday memories was last year when all my very best friends got together and took me out to dinner. it was super simple, but so sweet and fun to have them all there to share it with me.

Karate January 21, 2010 at 3:42 pm

I posted a “happy birthday!” comment right before, but it didn’t go through :(
Oh well. Doubly happy birthday to you!

hannah January 21, 2010 at 3:44 pm

happy birthday emma!
my favorite birthday memory was my golden birthday. i was 9 years old. when i came home from school my grandma gave me a small gold bow with a gold ribbon attached to it that led to our backyard. she told me to close my eyes and follow the ribbon. when i opened my eyes there in front of me was a MASSIVE gold bow attached to a trampoline. i don’t think i have ever been more surprised or excited. i had my first birthday party sleepover, and everything was gold, including my cupcake liners!

Lindsey Z. January 21, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Happy Birthday Emma!

Kaitlyn Suveg January 21, 2010 at 3:47 pm

My favorite birthday memory was the birth of my little sister ON MY BIRTHDAY in 1991. I was 5 years old, and she was my best present ever. :)

Meg January 21, 2010 at 4:00 pm

My favourite birthday memory is quite old..it dates back to my 10th birthday :) We celebrated with my family..and after everyone wished me whatever they wanted to wish, I was told to look out of the window.. So I did so..and in fron of the house there stood a brand new bike in red colour (the sparkly one, yay! :D ). I had to go out and try it on the spot!
That’s my favourite B-day memory..or the one I remember the most :P
Happy birthday, Emma!!!

Liz Duncan January 21, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Happy Birthday! The best birthday I ever was when my mom threw me a girls-only tea party in the Moroccan room at a lovely local tea shop in Madison, WI. The place is trendy and fun but the best thing about this birthday was having so many of the women I love come together to sit in a small, beautiful space eating tea sandwiches, scones, etc. while sipping tea and sharing memories. I still tear up thinking how powerful it was to have so many amazing people all together in one space. Hope your birthday is filled with bright, shinning colors and lots of fun and adventure with those you love. <3

sara January 21, 2010 at 4:10 pm

These look yum!!
Fave birthday memory is probably last year when my mates and I had a picnic in Hyde Park with cupcakes and wine and little party hats too :)
Oh and it was a surprise which makes it even more special!!

Tracey Yoo January 21, 2010 at 4:11 pm

Happy Birthday to you!
My absolute favorite birthday was my 40th which was two years ago! My husband and our best friends (a couple) went snowshoeing on the night of a full moon to a yurt out in the middle of nowhere. It was about a mile in. A five course meal (w/ wine of course)was snowmobiled to the yurt and we ate it by candle light. Later, we snowshoed back out and spent the night in a haunted hotel in Leadville, CO. I loved it!!!!!!

Valerie January 21, 2010 at 4:17 pm

My favorite birthday memory is of being able to eat ice cream for breakfast and out of the box. And at dinner my mom made me eat all my cake before I could have any veggies.

Nicole January 21, 2010 at 4:20 pm

The first thing you should know is that we (my sisters and I) weren’t allowed to have birthday parties when I was growing up. We just had our family over to celebrate with us. So this was a BIG DEAL.
My favourtie birthday memory is when I was turning 10. My parents, sisters and I were going to “The Yellow Slide Park” (which we had aptly nicknamed because of its…wait for it…yellow slide) and I got into the car to wait for them. My mom called me back inside for a phone call, and when I got back inside my best friend, my sisters and their best friends were all inside waiting for me for a surprise party. It was the best party EVER.

Leigh-Ann January 21, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Happy Birthday Emmmma :)

danielle January 21, 2010 at 4:24 pm

I just want to say how awesome it is you linked to Jezebel- made me fall a little more in love with you (in the most non-creepy type of internet love possible!)

Kim January 21, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Fun Giveaway!
My favorite memory is of my 8th birthday. I’ve always been a hand talker and I was so excited about my birthday cake that i yelled “That’s wonderful!” and whipped my hands out and swiped off half of the birthday cake. Funner yet was that Mom still wanted the “Birthday Party” picture so we all had to pose with the ruined cake. She turned the cake so the good side was out. Every time I look at that picture I remember the accident!

Tori January 21, 2010 at 4:36 pm

These scones look like they are to die for! And happy birthday to you!
Favorite birthday memory: It was my 3rd birthday and the party was great. Yummy food, fun friends, and great gifts. So, after I opened all of my presents, I asked my grandmother if she would take me home because I wanted to start playing with my toys and I didn’t want to share with the other children. Can you tell I was an only child? I grew out of the attitude, eventually.

Chelsea January 21, 2010 at 4:44 pm

Happy Birthday!!!
My favorite birthday memory is a couple years ago when me and my two best friends had a sleepover at my house. We had delicious food, threw around popcorn, saw Mama Mia in theatres, went swimming, and went ice scating….
It was a lot, but it was oh, so fun… =D
Happy Birthday again!!!
-Chelz

Jingle January 21, 2010 at 4:45 pm

One year my husband made a complete 3-D teapot for my cake! It was AMAZING! He did all the fondant and everything!!! It was yellow with wonderful flowers and full of happy things!

Emily January 21, 2010 at 4:49 pm

Happy Birthday!
One of my favorite birthday memories was when I turned 16. I’m Leap Year, so I was “really” four. My parents planned a car ralley (scavenger hunt that you drive around for) and each team had a “baby” that they had to take to places like Chuck E Cheese, Toys R Us, baby sitting service, etc. It was pretty funny!

Kokie January 21, 2010 at 4:51 pm

It sounds silly but when I was little and my family would come over for my party my mom would take mason jars and fill them will the different flowers that my mom grew in her gardens. I just loved going out in my pretty dress feeling on top of the world, and spending quality time with my mom enjoying the nature just outside our home.

Oli January 21, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Happy birthday Em…

Holly S January 21, 2010 at 5:14 pm

My fav birthday memory would be of my daughter’s 2nd birthday…you see as she was turning 2, Barney and Baby Bopp were huge…she loved them. So my sister found a Barney and they dressed up and came to her party (as a surprise) and brought her balloons and danced with her. I love the photos of that day.

Allie January 21, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Happy Birthday Emma!
My favorite birthday memory is from when I was 17 (in high school) and my boyfriend (who was in college) arranged with my favorite teacher to throw a surprise party for me during a class. He completed the day with roses and chocolate cake, and surprising me by stopping in– I didn’t think I would see him at all that day, due to after-school activities and us both working :-)

Mandy January 21, 2010 at 5:19 pm

My favorite birthday memory: When I was 7 I got the chicken pox. My grandfather and I share the same birthday and even though I was sicker than a dog, he snuck into my room and brought me a birthday cupcake complete with a candle to make a wish on. I’m turning 26 this year and it is still one of my favorite birthday memories.

Anne Thompson January 21, 2010 at 5:28 pm

Happy Bday! Cuuute cupckake liners! My fave birthday memory was a beautiful party my friend threw me for my 26th. It was the first party that someone other than my Mom threw for me! Luv Anne

Amy Cluck January 21, 2010 at 5:29 pm

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Mine is on the 29th! LOVE the Bake It Pretty shop too.
I don’t have one exact moment but there’s been a few times where friends have really gone out of their way to make me feel special – by throwing me a party or by giving me special handmade gifts that were made just for me. It really made me feel loved. Oh, and also the birthday donuts my dad used to get every year and set out for me to find when I woke up.

sara January 21, 2010 at 6:05 pm

most memorable birthday was this past one. I was on a roadtrip with my bestie, Jess, and we woke up in LA (great) got coffee at intelligentsia (even better) and then purchased the Hannah Montana DVD and mutemath album that had both come out that day (hilarious).
then it took a turn for the worse when we drove through the desert and were miserable because my AC broke. so we ended up forgoing camping in the Grand Canyon and instead stayed at a hotel on Route 66 in flagstaff. It was a long, great, hard, and memorable day. many laughs and drops of sweat. haha.

alyssa January 21, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Awww, happy birthday to you!! This is my sister-in-law’s and my grandma’s birthday as well. A really good day. My favorite birthday memory was being totally surprised and thrilled last year when my boyfriend proposed. :)

Wendy January 21, 2010 at 6:34 pm

This blog has quick become one of my fav’s. I love to bake and you seem like such a sweet girl :)
My favorite birthday memory is for sure my 18th. It was right after moving into the dorms and all the girls in my hall came together to bake me a cake and take me out to breakfast at my (then new) favorite restaurant. Gourmet crepes! Ooh la la!

jes January 21, 2010 at 6:45 pm

my fave birthday moment was when we went to new york to go see CBGB’s before it closed. it tops every other birthday memory ever!

Stephanie Lamb January 21, 2010 at 6:59 pm

happy birthday!!!
my favorite birthday memory is from my 16th birthday, when my best friends swept me away to disneyland for the day and took me to dinner at goofy’s kitchen afterwards – they had the whole restaurant sing me happy birthday as I stood on a chair. it was embarrassing but so sweet :)

deanne January 21, 2010 at 7:03 pm

Happy Birthday Emma!
My favorite birthday memory is from my 21st birthday (last year). Since my birthday was on a very busy day for my family’s business I had to work the whole day, which i didn’t really mind since I had celebrated my birthday the previous day exactly how I wanted to with my boyfriend and lovely friends at my favorite restaurant. Anyways, before I got to work my parent’s secretary had made a sign saying, “Today is my 21st birthday! Wish me happy birthday! Ps I don’t know this sign is here”, and placed it outside, and out of my line of view at my work station.
A few minutes after I had started a little boy standing with his mom and dad looked up at me and said, “happy birthday”. Slightly stumped as to why this little boy would know it was my birthday that day, I decided to brush it off and figured that he probably heard the lady working next to me asking me about what i did for my birthday dinner a few minutes before. However, that little boy was not the only person to wish me a happy birthday. Person after person kept wishing me happy birthday and after about the tenth person my co-worker finally caved in and told me about the sign outside my window.
As a result of the sign I had about five hundred people or more wish me a very happy 21st birthday, and I was also offered numerous alcoholic drinks by people I had never met.
That day really showed me how kind people really can be, as they could have ignored the idea and not said a thing, but most of them didn’t and because of them I will never forget the birthday where I was wished happy birthday more times then I had ever been in my whole life!
That was long one haha! Hope you enjoyed it!

hey there Emma:
I really like your blog! It is sweet! I cant even remember how I found it, but tonight is my first night checking it out and its super cute!!
Happy birfday!!!
My favoritest birthday memory is 5 years ago when my grandmother had given me the same birthday gift 2 years in a row. It was a Debbie Mumm cookie jar. She was so embarrassed once she realized she had given me the same exact gift as the year before, but it still to this day makes me smile when I think of that. She has been passed away for 2 years. When I look at the cookie jar today, it makes me smile and remember just how special she was. ;)

Happy Birthday Emma! To be 24 again {sigh}
my best bday memory before I started celebrating with my hubby (each one of those are the best) was when I was kid. My sis worked @ McDonalds and she had me a birthday party. Happy meals for everyone! I think i was 8 or 9. As I approach a new bday this year, I will seal it with a tat! Enjoy your 20′s

On my 31st birthday after going through a rough period of depression, my husband got my whole family together to surprise me at one of my favorite restaurants. My mother gave me a card that said “For every candle on your cake, Daughter, there is one more year of reasons to thank God for the gift of you”. this was an especially magical birthday for me. That card saved my life.

My favorite memory is my Barney themed birthday party. I was 7(?) and my dad surprised me with a lifesize wooden cutout of him painted and all at my party!!!
Happy Birthday!!! It’s my boyfriend’s birthday and I made blueberry pancakes with him this morning! I would have suggested scones if I had seen this!! :) mmm…looks yummy!

Didn’t have many happy birthday memories. My favorite was when I got my feather pillows. Loved those pillows. They were like my mothers. Used to sleep on 2 pillow at once and I would fluff them up and then put my head on them and squish them down. Pure bliss. Never been able to find another feather pillow like those.

My favorite birthday memory would have to be my 17th birthday. I was in London with my family because my mom had wanted to take us on a big family trip before I graduated high school. We went to this really amazing sushi place called Yo Sushi where plates of sushi and sashimi went by your table on a conveyor belt and you could just grab whatever looked yummy. Then we went to Piccadilly circus and watched the street performers.

My favorite birthday memory is my 9th birthday. We went to Olive Garden for dinner (my choice because they always gave me a mini cake) and my mom gave me a tshirt for my birthday. I wasn’t really excited, but acted like it anyways. But when we got home I was surprised with a miniature pug!

Happy Birthday! I’ll be 24 soon, too :)
My fav birthday memory is from last year – I pretty much knew my hubby (then fiance) was going to surprise me with a bday dinner with friends, but I had NO IDEA it would be followed up with roller skating and a slumber party! It was amazing :D
PS: It’s wonderful to read everyone’s responses! Great idea :)

My favorite memory (now) is from when I turned 7. My mom said I cried and cried and when she asked why, I said it was because even though it was my birthday, I didn’t feel any different than when I was 6 years old! what a weirdo. it makes me laugh now. Are you going to share your 24 goals with us?!! I’d love to hear – I turn 25 in two weeks and I think it would be a lot of fun to make a few goals of my own.

Yummy Scones! My favorite birthday memory is of my 16th birthday. My best friend had flown in from St. Louis to surprise me. :)

Lisa January 22, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Too fun! Congrats on making Martha’s scones – mmmm!
My favorite birthday moment … celebrating my 21st birthday in Germany. Some of the guys thought that they should bequeath me with the cheapest beer-in-a-can possible. I said “Thanks” and put it in my armoire.
A couple of days later … the smell was so bad it was leaking out of the can, out of my closet and making me sick. haha. I promptly dumped it down my bathroom sink.
It was a nice thought tho.
Thanks!! And happy day. :-)

Nicole January 23, 2010 at 11:31 pm

I just made your scones and am so in love with them!!! They are fantastic.

Mish February 1, 2010 at 1:35 am

Did you happen to mean 2 tsp of baking soda and not 2Tbsp? That just seems like an awful lot of baking soda. Just wondering and totally not trying to be rude. .they do look yummy though :)

Mish August 29, 2010 at 1:02 am

Ok so I did try using 2Tbsp like your recipe says and it didn’t come out…well this sounds rude but edible. I tried again with just 2tsp and it was much better this time. I apologize if I sound rude but I just wanted to find out if you had meant 2tsp or not. Thanks!

I walked half an hour, went to the hospital to see dentist change practice. I don’t know he is a branch to work today, also don’t know him not to work today. When that registers, he met his teacher hoardings and the daughter, go through the hall outside, then waved goodbye. Turned round, he saw me, and was to smile. I was very calm, consumedly square smile at him: “hey, your new girlfriend very beautiful.”

Jo September 4, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Hello! I love your blog, but need to tell you I made the blueberry scone recipe and they were not edible. I think perhaps the 2 Tablespoons of baking soda was a typo? Maybe it was meant to be 2 teaspoons? Thanks! Jo

Josefina September 12, 2011 at 11:31 pm

Emma!! que yo también cumplo los años el 21 de enero!!!
